VIA Press Release: New rule: You can bring your e-bike on your next VIA trip
SAN ANTONIO (MARCH 26, 2024) — Beginning Tuesday, March 26, VIA Metropolitan Transit passengers traveling with personal electric bikes may bring them on bus trips, a move that allows commuters better options for their first- and last-mile transportation.
E-bikes will be allowed for transport in the same fashion as traditional bicycles — on external bike racks on VIA buses and on internal racks on VIA’s Prímo buses. During transport on VIA vehicles, e-bike batteries must remain attached to the bicycle frame and powered off. E-bikes may not be charged using any power sources on VIA vehicles.
“This is another positive step toward ensuring people have convenient, affordable transportation options that integrate micro-transit for more complete trips,” VIA President/CEO Jeffrey C. Arndt said. “E-bikes are growing in popularity for commuters and can be a great option for people to start and finish their trips that incorporate public transit.”
Commercially owned e-bikes, public rentals or phone-app-based e-bikes are not permitted. Customers who transport e-bikes must also follow all VIA policies applicable to traditional bicycles as well.
