New Mexico Transit Leaders and Agencies Recognized for Excellence

The 2026 SWTA + New Mexico Joint Annual Conference & EXPO also served as a platform to recognize outstanding achievements across New Mexico, highlighting agencies and leaders who continue to elevate public transit through innovation, service, and leadership.

James Barela with Atomic City Transit – Los Alamos County accepted the award for the New Mexico 2025 Rural Transit System of the Year Award. This recognition honors agencies that demonstrate excellence in serving rural communities through reliable, efficient, and innovative public transit service. Under his leadership, Atomic City Transit continues to meet the evolving needs of its riders while strengthening mobility within the region.

Robert Gonzales, Director of Rio Metro Regional Transit District, was honored with the 2026 New Mexico Transit Agency of the Year Award. This award reflects the agency’s leadership in advancing regional mobility through strategic partnerships, forward-thinking initiatives, and a commitment to improving access and service across the communities it serves.

These recognitions highlight the critical role public transit plays in strengthening communities and improving quality of life across New Mexico.
