SporTran Secures Approval for Shreveport’s Registered Transit Apprenticeship Program
A transformative workforce development initiative for the future of public transportation
Shreveport, LA — SporTran is proud to announce that the Louisiana Apprenticeship Commission has officially approved the agency’s new Registered Apprenticeship Program, marking a historic milestone for workforce development in the region.
This groundbreaking program — which was presented before the Commission by SporTran CEO Dinero Washington, agency leadership, and ATU Local 558 representatives — will create a long-term pipeline of highly skilled transit mechanics trained to support the region’s evolving fleet, including diesel, hybrid, and zero-emission technologies.
“This apprenticeship approval is more than a workforce initiative — it is an investment in people, opportunity, and the future of Shreveport-Bossier transit,” said CEO Dinero Washington. “SporTran is committed to building a strong, modern workforce that can carry our community forward for generations.”

A Major Advancement for Regional Workforce and Economic Development
The newly approved Registered Apprenticeship Program will:
- Build a Skilled Workforce — Develop highly trained mechanics prepared to support innovative and environmentally friendly transit technologies.
- Expand Career Pathways — Offer paid, hands-on training that leads to long-term, high-demand, high-wage careers with full benefits.
- Strengthen Community Stability — Support local workers, families, and economic growth through sustainable career opportunities.
- Reduce Turnover & Improve Service Quality — Create a culture of advancement, training, and retention that enhances public transit reliability.
As transit systems nationwide modernize, SporTran is intentionally preparing its internal workforce to meet technological and industry demands. The Registered Apprenticeship Program ensures:
- A steady talent pipeline for future operations
- Greater capacity to maintain new zero-emission and hybrid buses
- Stronger community trust through enhanced safety and service
“SporTran is not just investing in buses; we’re investing in people, careers, and the strength of our regional workforce,” said Washington.
