2026 Conference Recap: A Week to Remember

The 2026 SWTA + New Mexico Joint Annual Conference & EXPO presented by Model 1 Commercial Vehicles brought together public transit leaders from across the country for an impactful week in Albuquerque.

From meaningful conversations and innovative ideas to strong partnerships and shared experiences, this year’s conference reflected the strength and collaboration of the public transit community. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this event a success.

 

Transit Professional of the Year: Wendy Weedon

SWTA proudly recognized Wendy Weedon, Chief Executive Officer of Brazos Transit District, as the Transit Professional of the Year. With 17 years of service at Brazos Transit District and just over a year in her role as CEO, Wendy’s leadership, dedication, and long-standing commitment to public transit continue to make a meaningful impact across the industry. Her work reflects excellence in service, innovation, and community connection, and her leadership continues to strengthen mobility for the communities she serves.

 

New Mexico Awards & Recognition

The conference also celebrated outstanding achievements across New Mexico.

James Barela with Atomic City Transit – Los Alamos County accepted the award for the New Mexico 2025 Rural Transit System of the Year Award, recognizing excellence in serving rural communities through reliable and innovative public transit.

 

Robert Gonzales, Director of Rio Metro Regional Transit District, was honored with the 2026 New Mexico Transit Agency of the Year Award, reflecting leadership in advancing regional mobility, partnerships, and service delivery.

 

Women in Transit Showcase: Leadership That Inspires

The Women in Transit session, sponsored by Spare, brought together strong voices in leadership for an impactful and engaging discussion.

Moderated by Kendra McGeady, the session featured panelists Andrea Ball, Angie Gilliam, and Wendy Weedon, who shared insights on leadership, career growth, and the evolving role of women in public transit. The session created meaningful dialogue and reinforced the importance of mentorship, representation, and continued investment in leadership across the industry.

 

The EXPO: Where the Industry Comes Together

The EXPO Hall served as a central hub throughout the conference, connecting agencies, Tribal leaders, and industry partners in one dynamic space. Attendees explored the latest vehicles, technology, and services shaping the future of public transit while building meaningful relationships and discovering new solutions.

 

Sessions & Experiences That Delivered Impact

This year’s conference delivered practical, real-world value through sessions focused on funding, workforce development, safety, leadership, and innovation. General sessions and breakout discussions provided insight into the future of public transit, while technical tours of ABQ RIDE and the Rail Runner offered a behind-the-scenes look at systems in action.
